FROM US TO YOU We have journeyed far, across continents, through ancient cities and timeless landscapes. But it is here, in the south of Sri Lanka, that we feel most rooted. Most still. Most whole. The ස Sa House was born from a longing for stillness in a fast-moving world, for slowness as a way of life. First, it was our private sanctuary. A quiet refuge to return to ourselves. But as time passed, we felt it called to open its doors softly, intentionally and share this sense of peace with kindred travellers. Everything you see here has been placed with care. A garden bench turned toward the sunset, the curve of a handmade chair, a space left open so the breeze always knows where to go. This is an ode to Sri Lanka, to its ancient healing wisdom, its masterful craftsmanship, its gentle rhythms of living in harmony with the land. We believe true luxury is neither loud nor tangible. It is time. It is space. It is presence.
SA | ස | THE MEANING OF THE NAME We chose this name not only for how it looks, carved in quiet beauty, but for what it stands for, a way of life. Rooted in Sri Lanka. Unrushed. Intentional. Gentle. The Sa ස logo gives this character a place of quiet prominence and tribute to the ancient language of Sinhala. A signature of the house, and of all that it holds. At the heart of The Sa House is a single letter: “ස”, pronounced /sa/. Rendered in the flowing curves of the ancient Sinhala alphabet, it holds meanings that can’t always be translated, but can always be felt. It is the first syllable of සනස /ˈsanasə/ peace, සුගන්ධ /suˈɡand̪ ʰə/ fragrance, සරල /ˈsarələ/ simplicity, and සුවය /ˈsuwəjə/ heal. It is both a sound and a state of being. A return to self.
RESTORING A SOUL Some houses wait quietly to be found. When we first stepped through the overgrown path to what is now The Sa House, we didn’t see ruin we felt memory.
What followed was not a renovation, but a restoration of soul slow, thoughtful, and deeply rooted in place. When we first arrived, the house was nearly lost to time. An old cinnamon plantation home, it stood hidden among overgrowth, its bones still proud but softened by weather and silence. Cracks ran across clay walls. Trees curled into the structure. The land once cultivated had returned to the wild. We didn’t want to rebuild. We wanted to remember.
In the living room, we preserved a stretch of the original rock and hand-packed clay wall. A feature now but once a foundation. It remains as homage, grounding modern comforts in heritage. Over four years, we worked slowly, lovingly and intentionally. Letting the house guide us. The original layout grounded in Sri Lankan tradition was left intact, only gently opened to the landscape. Every room was reoriented to embrace the views: tree tops, paddies, sky. Even the light was considered how it enters, where it lingers without needing to be summoned. THE ORIGINAL LAYOUT GROUNDED IN SRI LANKAN TRADITION WAS LEFT INTACT, ONLY GENTLY OPENED TO THE LANDSCAPE Archways were introduced, inspired by vernacular architecture but with softened, minimal lines. Local teak, forms the bones of every table, bedframe, and door. All furniture from the sweeping daybeds to the curved timber chairs was crafted by Sri Lankan artisans, many of whom live within miles of the house.
THIS IS NOT JUST A VILLA. IT’S A WAY OF LIVING Here, nature is not a backdrop, but a presence constant, alive, and quietly magnificent.
Step away from the noise, into a home that was never made to be seen, but to be felt.
ISLAND LIFE, REIMAGINED WITH REVERENCE Let the air be warm on your skin, the sky vast above you, and the hours completely your own. Let the day unfold gently with no demands, no noise, no rush. Drift from sun-drenched verandahs to shade beneath the mango trees, guided only by light and instinct. At The Sa House, time softens. And in its place, presence returns quiet, full, and entirely yours.
Every element from the carved timber to the birdsong at dusk is an invitation to return to yourself.

A LIFE LIVED SLOWLY Mornings arrive softly at The Sa House. No alarms. Just birdsong and golden light slipping through trees. The landscape doesn’t rush and neither do you. From the Juliet balconies, the world stretches green and endless. Coconut palms sway, egrets wade through dew-covered fields, and the warm breath of the island stirs you gently awake. When you begin to slow down, the world begins to open. You start to notice what was always there, the melodic calls of the birds, the rustle of squirrels in the orchard, the glint of a kingfisher diving in the paddy. Exotic birds flicker past as you sip your tea from the living room. They live here too, going about their quiet lives, sharing this land with us. At The Sa House, nothing is hurried. You glide through the pool. You stretch out on a sunbed with a book, or with no intention at all. The garden invites you to wander without destination. Thoughts unravel. Conversations deepen. There is no television here by design.
WHEN YOU BEGIN TO SLOW DOWN, THE WORLD BEGINS TO OPEN.
To us, sustainability is not only about materials it’s about community. THOUGH THERE WAS SPACE TO EXPAND OUTWARD, WE CHOSE TO BUILD UPWARD INSTEAD, PRESERVING THE EXISTING TREES, THE CONTOURS OF THE EARTH, AND THE NATURAL BALANCE OF THE SITE
At The Sa House, sustainability is not a feature, it’s a philosophy. A quiet commitment woven into every decision, from the ground up. From the very first sketch, we chose to build with the land, not over it. Though there was space to expand outward, we chose to build upward instead, preserving the existing trees, the contours of the earth, and the natural balance of the site. Rather than discard the old, we chose to honour it. Original roof tiles were carefully removed, preserved, and laid once again overhead. We salvaged architraves, windows, and door frames from the original home, reincorporating them into the new design, allowing memory to live alongside modernity. All of our water from our kitchen and bathrooms are purified and reused to nourish the gardens. Our herbs and vegetables are grown just steps from the kitchen. What we don’t grow, we source thoughtfully from local markets, fishermen, and spice traders who’ve worked this land long before we arrived.
BEYOND THE GATES Unhurried journeys beyond the gates, where the island reveals itself softly. Though The Sa House invites you to slow down and stay still, the surrounding region offers moments of discovery for those who wish to explore. From sunrise surf sessions and temple visits to village cycling and seaside strolls, every experience is rooted in the local rhythm - unhurried, authentic, and deeply connected to place. Sunset Walks in Galle Fort Stroll the 17th-century ramparts of Galle Fort as the sun dips into the sea. The golden light, colonial architecture, and ocean breeze offer a moment of still beauty in a world steeped in history. 1 Visit to Yatagala Temple Tucked beneath ancient trees and built into a rocky hillside, Yatagala Temple is a place for quiet reflection. Light incense, offer flowers, or simply sit and feel the calmness. 2 Surfing in Ahangama Just minutes away, Ahangama offers warm, glassy waves and a laid- back surf culture.

SRI LANKA Sri Lanka is more than a destination. It is a deeply layered civilisation ancient, diverse, and alive. Many guests ask us: when is the best time to come to Sri Lanka? The answer, truly, is anytime. Sri Lanka is a tropical country, blessed with warm weather all year round. We don’t have harsh seasons, only gentle shifts. A cool breeze here. A brief rain there. Rain in Sri Lanka is never something to fear. It arrives gently, sometimes for only minutes, washing the dust from the leaves and perfuming the air. Tropical rain is a gift. It makes the paddy fields glow, the earth breathe, the trees sigh with relief. To witness one is to see the island in its truest, most tender light. If you prefer liveliness, the island hums with energy from November to March, when the sun stretches long and the surf is at its finest. But if you long for solitude empty beaches, quiet temples, slow walks through misty hills the other months offer their own kind of magic.
Long before maps knew our name, Sri Lanka was a kingdom of extraordinary vision. Our ancient cities: Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya are not just ruins, but testaments to a civilisation that built vast irrigation systems, celestial palaces, and cities aligned with the stars. Kings like Parākramabāhu built lakes so large they are still used today. Kashyapa raised an entire palace atop a rock fortress known as the Sigiriya. Even the ancient inscriptions on cave walls speak of art, engineering, medicine, and spiritual devotion - a civilisation rooted in knowledge and grace.
